The Blood Bank at KFSH

Hi! Mr. B here. I finally got to go and see where Claudia is working now. Those of you who are lab people will find this place very familiar. The equipment is a lot like that I saw at AMC.

Here's where they come to pick up the blood for transfusion after the Blood Bank staff has gotten it ready.

This is one of the work benches where patient samples are tested and blood components are prepared for transfusion.

This machine may not be so familiar. It is an automated instrument for setting up and reading the gel cards. Since we routinely do over 120 types and screens daily, it's a real blessing.

Lots of components (plasma, platelets, cryo) are prepared here. Units are also split, irradiated, and leukoreduced. The Sterile Docker gets a workout, too.

Sometimes units of red cells have to be washed, too. Claudia said she hadn't done that since she worked at the Red Cross.

Claudia doesn't actually work in this area, but it's adjancent to the Crossmatch section. Here is where the red cells, plasma, platelets, and cryo are prepared from the whole blood collected from donors.
This is the Senior Technologist office area where Claudia will be hanging out some as she takes on the administrative responsibilities of the job. Maybe she'll let me come and visit again.
