Al Ma'ather Cave Park

The Al Ma'ather Cave Park is part of the land donated to the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center. Historically it was a place of recreation near Riyadh used for picnics and social gatherings. King Abdulaziz would often hold important meetings there. About a decade ago it was developed as a part of the hospital landscaping and is utilized by the hospital staff and their dependents. It also hosts several social events throughout the year. Just last week (March '04) we had a Blood Donor Awareness event there with not only information about blood donation, but also refreshments and fun activities for the entire family.
The building in the background of this picture is Complex E in which I reside. So you can see I have ready access to the park!
Just inside the gate of the park is the Kudu fast food restaurant. I come here several times a week during my lunch hour. I suppose I really come too often -- the guys there already know what I will be ordering when I walk in the door!
There is a nice picnic area in the park. On weekend days (Thursdays and Fridays) many families come here. Often they bring carpets for picnicing on the ground.
My favorite area for lunching is here by the water. There's something about the sound of water that is very relaxing.
The caves themselves also provide an area were some choose to lay out their carpets and enjoy the afternoon of relaxation.

In the area at the top of the caves it is a more desert-like environment. But along the trail a series of fitness activities have also been constructed.
This is a fun fortress for the children to enjoy. It also gives a nice overview of the park and even into the city.
There's also a playground with swings, slides, and all the things that the youngsters enjoy.
But my favorite spot is right here by the water!
